Our Story

From Shelter to Service: The Story of Honey & Stefan

A crash. A shelter. A dog no one wanted. And a decision that changed everything.

Stefan Walter, founder of Honey On Duty

Meet Stefan Walter

Stefan Walter is a mental health advocate, entrepreneur, chaplain-in-training, and the heart behind Honey On Duty. After surviving a high-speed car accident that unlocked years of unprocessed trauma — depression, anxiety, survivor's guilt — Stefan found his calling when he walked into Stafford County Animal Shelter and met a dog that everyone else had passed by. Twice.

Stefan is trained in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and has dedicated his life to bridging the gap between human trauma and animal-assisted healing. He founded Honey On Duty to prove that healing doesn't always come in the form of medicine or therapy — sometimes it comes with four paws and a wagging tail.

Together, Stefan and Honey have visited hospitals, hospice facilities, fire stations, police departments, and communities across 15+ states. Their mission is simple: show up, be present, and remind people they are not alone.

Meet Honey

Adopted: March 27th — her official birthday

Honey was surrendered twice before finding her forever home. Most people saw her breed and walked away. Stefan saw a soul that deserved a second chance and a purpose.

Adopted from Stafford County Animal Shelter on March 27th now celebrated as her official birthday Honey has since earned her AKC Canine Good Citizen certification (Advanced), Alliance of Therapy Dogs certification, and CISM training for crisis response.

She has been recognized across the country for her extraordinary ability to connect with people in their most vulnerable moments. Honey doesn't just visit — she heals.

Our Mission

"The Honey On Duty Project exists to bring healing, hope, and dignity to people in pain through the quiet strength of a trained service dog, trauma-informed human support, and community education — so no one has to face crisis, illness, or grief alone."

Our Vision

"We imagine a world where every person walking through illness, trauma, or loss can access a safe human, a steady dog, and a path forward — where dogs get second chances, compassion is accessible, and healing of mind, body, and spirit is something we build together in every city Honey visits."

Compassionate Presence

We show up, we stay, we listen. No one is just 'a case.' Hospital beds, burn units, funerals, jails, and crisis scenes are sacred ground.

Dignity in Hard Moments

Every person we serve — regardless of circumstance — deserves to be treated with full dignity. We go where others won't, and we stay as long as it takes.

Redemption & Second Chances

For people and for dogs. A surrendered dog became a healer. A broken story became a purpose. We believe no one is beyond a second chance.

Mind–Body–Spirit Healing

We honor mental health, physical pain, and spiritual needs as one story. Faith is invited, never imposed. We meet people where they are.

Dog & Shelter Advocacy

We model what a well-trained service dog can be: safe, steady, trusted. We advocate for shelter dogs and ethical training at every opportunity.

Collaboration Over Competition

We partner with hospitals, shelters, trainers, nonprofits, and community resources. Healing is not a solo act — it takes a village.

Integrity & Stewardship

Money, time, and trust are handled carefully. Donations fund real visits and real impact. We are accountable to the people we serve.

How We Got Here

The      Crash

Everything Changes

A 75 mph collision with a semi-truck. Stefan and his family survived — but the aftermath unlocked years of unprocessed trauma: depression, anxiety, survivor's guilt. The search for healing begins.

March        27

Honey Comes Home

Stefan walks into Stafford County Animal Shelter looking for a different dog. Staff bring out a twice-surrendered pitbull. Thirty minutes in the observation room later, Stefan tells the universe: I choose her.

Year 1

The Work Begins

Honey earns her AKC Canine Good Citizen certification. Stefan learns that training a service dog means training yourself — and that the bond they're building is already changing him.

Year 2

Certified & Deployed

Alliance of Therapy Dogs certified. First hospice visits. First HoneyGrams delivered. The mission stops being an idea and becomes a practice.

Today

15+ States & Still Going

CISM trained. 30+ flights. 1,500+ HoneyGrams. Thousands of lives touched. Honey and Stefan are building something that can't be measured in miles — only in moments.

Meet the Team Still Becoming

Seal Team Three

While Honey leads the way in hospice rooms, on airplanes, and at community events across the country, two more hearts are quietly training at home — getting their work brains ready for the day they join her in the field.

Happi

German Shepherd & Pitbull Mix

From Stafford County Animal Shelter

Happi is Stefan's first dog — and from the very first week it felt like she had always been there. Stefan says she almost resembles Honey's temperament already: calm, attentive, and ready to work. At just 11 weeks old she was already sleeping through the night, holding her place pad, and keeping her eyes locked on Stefan across the room.

Honey calls herself the Drill Instructor and Happi the Master Jedi in training — still working on her stealth nap techniques (she snores), but her tactical cuddle engagement is already five-star level. She brings joy, energy, and a whole lot of heart.

Sunni

Alaskan Husky & Pitbull Mix

From Stafford County Animal Shelter

Sunni is Stefan's second dog and the youngest of the pack. She joined the family at 8 months old and has been growing up fast ever since. Calm and curious from the start, she had her very first official paw print made at the Super Pet Expo in Manassas, Virginia — a little memento of exactly where her journey began.

She's the snuggler of the group, always ready for an adventure and the first one riding shotgun on any car ride. Sunni brings warmth and reassurance in a way that doesn't need words.

"Together, Honey, Happi, and Sunni are what we call Seal Team Three — a whole Pity family, every single one of them a second chance from the same shelter, working toward the same purpose. The field awaits."
